ERP 62 Strategic Road Network Closures
This plan provides information on what to do when the strategic road network has been closed.
The purpose of this document is to inform Police Officers and Staff on the Police procedures for a prolonged closure of the Strategic Road Network (SRN) in England, whilst recognising and collaborating with partner agencies to achieve their organisational objectives.
Most motorways and some all-purpose trunk roads, covering more than 4500 miles, are part of the SRN and are the responsibility of National Highways. All other public roads are the responsibility of Local Authority Highways Departments. The roads covered by the SRN within the Avon and Somerset Police area consist of:
- M4 corridor, east to London, west into South Wales
- M5 corridor, north to Gloucester and beyond, south into Devon and Cornwall
- M48 and M49 connecting routes into South Wales via the two River Severn bridges
- M4 M5 interchange at Almondsbury
- A303 main trunk road traversing east to west, just north of Yeovil
- A36 heading south out of Bath towards Hampshire
The SRN is the most heavily used part of the national road network, carrying a third of all traffic and two-thirds of all freight. As such the operational aims of this ERP will implement a Traffic Management Plan establishing:
- rendezvous points
- traffic control
- marshalling areas
- diversions
- communications with the public
